App Can Help Sightseers Be City Slickers
It is that time of year eager travellers turn from summer sunshine holidays to planning autumn city breaks, and there is an App that has a growing reputation for helping the sightseer get around some of the most popular destinations to catch the key attractions.
CityMapper is a guide to transportation facilities in each of the cities that it covers, about 30 of them so far. It offers as comprehensive a journey planning service as locally available information permits.
It plans the best route to get to a destination from wherever the App is being used in the city and, wherever possible, adds in real-time information.
The default screen shows current locations on a city map, overlaid with the primary transport links and giving the option to plan a journey across town to a chosen location.
It adds in up-to-the-minute information on any rail or transit line delays, where available, or traffic disruption, to help keep the advice which it gives as current as possible.
While it is primarily aimed at travel on rail, tube, rapid transit and bus services, it also throws in options for walking, for finding bike share services and for locating a cab.
When it is used on the public transport services it gives a warning when approaching the required stop for getting off.
The App covers the most popular European destinations, including London, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Berlin, Milan, Rome and Barcelona, and several key North American destinations such as New York, Washington, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver and Mexico City.
