Is Your Computer Asking You About Windows 10?

asks Peter Clarke of PC PALwin 10

Recently I have had enquiries from a few confused customers asking about a new icon that has appeared on their computer offering free Windows 10 - many think it may be a scam or Malware.

For once, this is a genuine offer from Microsoft - but before you click on this be sure you know the facts - for example this icon only allows reservation of Windows 10 as it is not actually available until July 29th; after this date you may be put on a waiting list. Once you have reserved your copy be aware it is likely to automatically download when available and then remind you regularly to install the program; this could become annoying.

Windows 10 is the newest operating system from Microsoft and is intended to replace Windows 7 and Windows 8. For the first 12 months it is being offered as a free upgrade to many users but won't be available as an update to Vista or XP users.

Reviewers are hailing it as a triumph for Microsoft following the lukewarm reception for Windows 8. In Windows 10 there is a return to a more familiar style of Windows operating system. It is seen as easier to use than Windows 8.1, the Start menu is back, there is an upgraded internet browser, and it is future proof as Microsoft have committed to upgrade and develop it.

Windows 7 users may take some time getting used to the look and feel of Windows 10 and, as is the case with any new operating system, there may be potential hardware and software compatibility issues for all users - the full impact will not be known until it is launched.

It is probably better not to rush in to download the update as if you wait a couple of months any problems should have been identified and resolved.  If you are going ahead then you will need a very good broadband connection as the download is very large and, as always, make sure you back up all of your data before running the update.

If you want to discuss this further to decide if Windows 10 is right for you, arrange a back up of all your data, or need any help with the upgrade please don’t hesitate to call me.
