Ready For A New Computer? – Make Sure You Get What You Need, Not What They Want To Sell You
Advises Peter Clarke of PC PAL
Choosing a new computer should be an exciting time but a few of my customers have recently told me that they went along with the computer retailer’s suggestions and when I came to install and set up their computer I found that they had bought things they really didn’t need.
So what do you need to look out for?
- If you already have an antivirus package on your old computer you can usually transfer the remaining months to your new computer. Some of my customers have been told that this is not possible and have bought the retailer’s recommended antivirus package instead
- If you use a particular piece of software e.g. Microsoft Office, you need to know if your existing version will work on your new computer.
- If it will and you still have the licence key the chances are it can be transferred
- If it can’t be transferred make sure that the new version that you are being sold includes only those programmes that you actually need – don’t end up paying for something you won’t use. However please be aware that some programs have a more basic free alternative which may well suit your needs e.g. Apache OpenOffice™ has a word processor, spreadsheet etc and Windows Live Mail can be used instead of Outlook
PC PAL want you to enjoy your new computer. In response to these stories I have decided to offer a free assessment of your existing computer to any customer that uses my services for the installation and set up of its replacement – I’ll look at your existing system and help you decide what you really need. I also now offer a ‘personal shopper’ service where I will visit a local retailer with you or help you buy the correct computer online.
If you need some help or wish to discuss this further please don’t hesitate to call me – I’ll be happy to help and put your mind at rest.
