Roaming Threat Is Back On The Table As MPs Mind The Gaps

Back in 2014, the Government did a deal with the four major operators of mobile phone networks.

These firms are not delivering and now the Government is threatening to bare its teeth.

When the deal was done, Culture Secretary of the day, Sajid Javid, agreed to back off from pursuing ‘roaming between networks’, which would have allowed phone users to hop on to other provider infrastructure in areas where their own network had poor coverage.

Instead, EE, O2, Three, Vodafone agreed to commit £5 billion to filling in many of the ‘not spots’ in their own signal availability by 2017.

Having reviewed progress with a year or so to go, a cross party group of MPs is underwhelmed and believes there is scant evidence to suggest the target will be met.

Accordingly, the threat of enforced roaming between networks has resurfaced.

One would think that, 30 years on from the birth of the mobile network in the UK, a good signal along the full length of our motorways and busiest ‘A’ roads would be assured.

However, having spent a few days last week touring these in the north of England, I became acutely aware that connectivity on my phone was harder to hang on to than a hat on a windswept Ilkley Moor.

Along the M1, it flashed between ‘4G’, ‘H’, ‘E’ and no signal more frequently than we were overtaking trucks.

Hopefully, the machinery of the Commons will keep turning the screw and either force the industry to fix it or bite the bullet and impose the sort of cross provider roaming that we take for granted when we are overseas.

We need that better deal.
