Thinking of changing from Windows XP? - Asks Peter Clarke of PC PAL
As many of you may know, from April 2014 Microsoft will no longer support nor provide updates for the Windows XP operating system. Don't worry, your computer will still work after this date but you will notice many computer shops and Microsoft warning you of this, and probably urging you to buy a new computer ‘before it’s too late’ - but don’t panic.
You need to consider what changing operating systems means to you and do it when you have prepared for the difference.
Buying a new computer comes with many considerations (even when you’ve chosen your new machine):
- You need to make sure all your photos, past emails and documents are transferred to your new computer
- You probably want to transfer your ‘favourites’ for the websites that you use on the internet
- You should consider setting up a backup for your information
- You will need to set up the computer to connect to your broadband router
- You will probably want to ensure your new computer looks as familiar and user friendly as your old computer
In addition to this, changing from Windows XP to Windows 7 or 8 may mean other considerations:
- Some programs you use now may not work under a new operating system so you might need to obtain and install newer versions
- Do you use Outlook Express for email? – it is not available for Windows 7 or 8 so you will need to install its alternative
As you can see, there are lots of things you need to think about so don’t listen to any scare tactics that try to get you to change before you are ready.
I have started seeing more of my customers facing these concerns and asking for help with setting up their new system in a way they find easy to use. If you are ready for the change, don’t panic and don’t hesitate to call me.
