Do you need a ‘Cloud’? - asks Peter Clarke of PC PAL
So, we’ve all heard about the future of the internet, ‘cloud computing’, but what is it and do you need it?
Well, many of you will have been using a form of cloud technology for years without even realising – No? Any of you use web mail e.g. Gmail.com or Hotmail.com? You log in from any computer and access all your email.
In its simplest form Cloud technology is using the internet to store your files which can then be accessed from any computer, smart phone, tablet or laptop anywhere. It even stores the programs to run the information.
Another good example of the use of this technology is online backup programs where all your files, photos, data etc. are backed up automatically to the Cloud. A big bonus of this is you always have your files, even if your computer dies.
Is it secure? Yes; all information is encrypted so only you will have access to your files.
Do I have to use it? No. But if you don’t you might want to consider the alternatives to backing up your information such as an external hard drive.
If you are interested in keeping your data safe, by any means, or want to know more about the cloud, I’ll be happy to discuss the options.
