New Year, new computer? - asks Peter Clarke of PC PAL
Were you lucky enough to receive a new computer this Christmas? Some people were, and then they face a few decisions:
- Have you been using Outlook or Outlook Express to look at your email? These programmes may be missing from your new computer and Outlook Express is not available on Windows 7 or 8 – look for Windows Live Mail as an alternative
- Windows 8 operating system is very different to anything you’ve seen before – where do you start? Guide books are available and good computer engineers such as PC PAL offer 1-2-1 training
- Your new computer probably comes with a time limited internet security package – what do you replace it with when it runs out? Ensure the replacement meets your needs especially if you do internet banking – did you know that free antivirus software is restricted in what it covers and even the companies that offer it suggest you have a paid for internet security version for full cover
Of course, if you didn’t receive a new computer perhaps the New Year is time to give your old computer a new lease of life:
- Disk Cleanup & Disk Defragmenter exist in the operating system to re organise how your computer utilises space on the hard drive, hence making interactions quicker
- Schedule your antivirus and anti-malware programmes to regularly scan your computer to keep your hard drive really clean
- Old programs that are no longer in use still take up valuable resource so removing the program (not just deleting the shortcut) can considerably improve your computer’s speed
PC PAL would like to wish all of our customers a Happy New Year!
