Telephone Scams
Cybercriminals often use the names of well-known companies in their scams. They think it will convince you to give them money or personal information. The scam goes like this;
- You receive an unsolicited phone call and are told there is a virus or problem with your computer and the caller can fix it.
- You get the hard sell regarding bad things that will happen to your computer if they do not sort out the problem immediately.
- You are directed to Event Viewer (shows details about various hardware and Windows software issues). This is full of messages, even on a healthy computer, but caller says they are warning signs of impending disaster.
- After downloading a remote control program the caller takes control of your computer and will claim they know exactly what the problem is and how to fix it.
- They ask for credit card details for a piece of software that will supposedly remove the ‘virus’.
- The software will tell you periodically that all viruses have been removed but in reality it could be downloading malware to your computer. The software could have the capability to sit in the background for months or years stealing personal information like bank login details and other information for identity theft purposes.

If you receive a phone call or email stating they are from Microsoft or another large computing company, saying you have a virus on your computer which they can fix over the phone - it is a scam. Hang up the phone, do not give them remote access to your computer and do not part with any money. |
