Stay ahead of the curve with new TVs. As always in early January, most of the major players gathered in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronic Show to show what they are planning to launch this year and what they are working on for the future. The overdue emergence of 4K televisions, four times the resolution of HD sets, is now expected this year.

Commentators of the show describe the picture quality demonstrated as “brilliant” and “breath-taking”. Another coming trending TV sets, though, will be the flexible screen. Because larger screens are easier on the eyes of many if they are slightly convex, the big firms are heading for curvature, and even variable degrees of bend, in their future screens.

LG, for instance, unveiled a 77 inch model where the exact curvature viewing comfort – at sofa distance in a particular room – could be adjusted from the remote control! There was a big emphasis on virtual reality gaming at the Show, with innovators looking to find an edge in the business of immersing players into the games. The most ambitious products on show was a PrioVR. This was aimed at giving full body virtual reality. It used an array of wearing wearable sensors, each containing three axis gyroscope, a three axis accelerometer and three axis magnetometer meter to reflect everybody movement in the game. Quite how you can chase a competent in a virtual reality game in such get up without bumping into something in your lounge or bedroom remains to be seen!

On a more mundane level, products for the online home work prevalent. These included wireless slow cookers and Bluetooth toothbrushes. Just what I never knew I needed!
