Does your computer still look the same to you?
asks Peter Clarke of PC PAL
I have had several calls in the last month from customers who have found that their browser (the way they access the internet) has changed 'all by itself'. They also report that some things 'look different' on their computer and some things just don't work anymore.
On inspection I can see that the Windows 10 upgrade has installed itself or Windows 10 has carried out one of its regular updates. Microsoft has set Windows 10 up with their choice of default settings which they reapply with some of the updates. Things that are altered include:
- The browser. Edge is their browser of choice rather than Chrome, Internet Explorer or Firefox - even though some websites don't work when you access them with Edge
- The PDF reader. Edge is their preferred reader for PDF files whereas most of my customers are used to Adobe Reader.
In all cases I have been able to change settings to ensure the computer looks how my customers want them rather than how Microsoft dictate.
So if you didn't previously have Windows 10 and things look a little different to you look for the Edge logo . It is very similar to Internet Explorer but if you have Edge, you have Windows 10. Anyone with Windows 10 can access various options in 'Settings' which can be found by clicking on the Start button in the bottom left hand corner of the screen. By altering these you can get your computer back to the way you want it.
If you want to discuss this further or need any help with altering your computer's settings, please don’t hesitate to call me.
